DESCRIPTION:

Introduction | Proposal

Contemporary societies have tended to live in smaller spaces. This behavior is motivated by a combination of factors, including the substantial increase in construction costs, thus hindering access to housing generously sized, especially for younger generations. Additionally, individualism, understood as an increasing social behavior, encourages independence and self-sufficiency, leading to the search of small affordable housing. Live in studio apartments is becoming more common.

Aggregatable Furniture seeks to give an architectural response to this growing problem. A design approach that combines space optimization with functional multiplicity through simple operations of morphological transformation. The choice of wood as a single material simplifies the manufacturing process, focusing on the economy of the product and thus facilitating its introduction into the market.

Space Optimization

Aggregatable Furniture is a set of equipment that emerges from a single transportable container and it allows to use the available space in a versatile and efficient way. The furniture functions as the Matryoshka nesting doll, in which the different parts act as a succession of packaging for the following. This confers the status of being easily stored, using parts that are necessary according to the activity to develop, saving the use of space.

The concept is to provide as many functions as possible from minimum initial volume. Storing the set in a container of easy transportability is a fundamental property in order to provide solutions to a segment of society that mainly rent and must "move" their home every two years.

Functional Multiplicity

Aggregatable Furniture is TRANSFORMABLE. Through the articulation of its parts, it enables a new range of applications, changes its status and interacts with the user.

Aggregatable Furniture is ASSOCIABLE. The various component parts can be connected together, obtaining endless functional-possibilities.

Aggregatable Furniture is RECONFIGURABLE. The user can permanently change the space according to their needs through the recombination of parts.

Design

Aggregatable Furniture includes 3 subsets of polyhedral bodies, each with an initial function assigned:

_2 Tables

_4 Shelves

_6 Banks

Each polyhedron has strategic cuts and / or removed faces that lighten the furniture and allow various functions, without weakening it structurally.

Manufacturing

Product economics was understood from the outset as a key factor both to realize the project and to make it available in a market of limited resources. In that sense, the project was designed in order to be built almost entirely with phenolic boards, an industrialized, inexpensive product, and it requires simple manufacturing processes. In addition, wood gives warmth to the space in which it is inserted, something that does not happen with synthetic options such as resins or plastics.
